Colonial Village, Shepherd Park, Brightwood and Takoma
 
Living in Washington DC is like living in the political equivalent to Hollywood, meaning you are just as likely to bump into one of your friends at a local restaurant as you are a celebrity or, more appropriately for Washington, a Senator. All three branches of the United States federal government are headquartered in Washington as is the World Bank, the Organization of American States and many international institutions such as foreign embassies. The additional presence of numerous national landmarks and it is easy to understand why the Metro DC Area is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country.

The National Mall is centrally located and serves to connect many of the prominent landmarks in the city to one another. The White House and Capitol buildings are linked by the Mall, as are the many monuments that memorialize American leaders. These include the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial which all share the Mall with other famous sites such as the National World War II Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the United States Navy Memorial.

Amazing as all this history is Washington is as much about the future as it is about recognizing the past. To this end, the many neighborhoods located throughout the District of Columbia have steadily evolved as well, making this one of the best residential areas to live in the United States. Fine academic institutions, a burgeoning employment market, and elegant and casual dining make the DC Area a thriving metropolitan city. Located in the Northwest quadrant, the residential neighborhoods of Colonial Village, Shepherd Park, Brightwood and Takoma are wonderful places that are both attractive and conveniently situated.

Home to approximately 22,000, the neighborhoods that comprise the Northwest quadrant are close to world-famous medical centers, college universities and beautiful green spaces that make hitting the trails for a walk, run or bike ride as easy as stepping off your front porch.

Colonial Village is a charming neighborhood that offers an impressive selection of real estate properties from which to choose. This outstanding community is situated in DC’s Cluster 16 and is filled with beautiful homes, parks and public spaces. Colonial Village is one of the finest neighborhoods in DC, lovely and peaceful with a stunning variety of homes that avoids the “cookie cutter” look of so many other places. The Rock Creek Gardens neighborhood abuts Colonial Village, and is filled with gorgeous homes, beautifully landscaped along rolling streets.

The Brightwood community is located in the upper Northwest part of DC immediately south of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Similar to Colonial Village, Brightwood is bordered by Rock Creek Park, which helps to shield residents from the hustle and bustle of city life. This offers residents the benefits of a suburban setting with the access and convenience of city life. Brightwood’s streets are lined with mature trees and well-tended lawns. Colonial and Tudor homes, as well as Wardman row houses, Bauhaus-inspired townhouses and newly constructed condominiums make this neighborhood a great place to live. Rock Creek Park Golf Course is nearby.

The neighboring community of Manor Park is another popular place to live. The neighborhood’s famous Georgia Avenue has been under a dramatic refurbishment since 2000 and is considered the heart of the community. A variety of detached and semi-detached homes dot tree-lined streets, sharing the sidewalks with small neighborhood businesses that serve to make this one of the District’s most friendly places. Despite the many small businesses operating here, Manor Park is primarily a quiet, suburban community. So, for those seeking a peaceful, bedroom-like neighborhood near the heart of the nation’s capital Manor Park is definitely worth considering.

Similar to Manor Park, Shepherd Park’s commercial corridor is also concentrated along Georgia Avenue. This predominately residential neighborhood is defined by its many streets named after flowers, shrubs and trees. Some examples include Iris Street, Primrose Road and Geranium Street. The architectural design of the beautiful homes in this neighborhood, which include Colonial, Ramblers, Tudors, Farmhouses, Split-levels and Sears Bungalows make for an attractive display for passer-byes admiring the aesthetic appeal of this lovely residential district.

Takoma was the first commuter suburb in the area. Takoma, (affectionately referred to by locals as Tacky Park) is anything but! Takoma, DC borders the avant-garde town of Takoma Park, Maryland. Both are known for their huge abundance of dazzling azaleas, giving the area its other moniker: Azalea City. Today, Takoma remains rich in historical character and cultural diversity. A variety of small businesses, storefront sidewalks and parks populate this DC community. Additionally, a variety of housing that ranges from affordably priced, small and moderately-sized bungalows to stately homes, grande dame, Queen Anne Victorians, and large four-square houses add to the diversity of the area. Takoma is an old fashioned neighborhood, populated by newcomers and long time residents. With its small-town charm intact, Takoma is considered one of DC most attractive neighborhoods.

The Northwest quadrant of Washington DC is a great place to live. Like all of Washington, this part of the city is extremely diverse which lends itself to the city’s culturally rich heritage. Although home prices are in the higher than national average range, homebuyers will definitely understand that their investment was money well spent.
